Adverb: Certainty Adverbs in Guesses and Reports

- Certainty adverbs tell us how sure the speaker is about something.
- Common ones: säkert (surely/certainly), nog (probably/I suppose), kanske (maybe), antagligen (probably), verkligen (really), visst (of course/certainly), troligen (likely).
- They usually sit in the middle field of the sentence, after the verb in a main clause.
- Choosing the right adverb changes the meaning: "Han är nog hemma" (He's probably home) vs "Han är säkert hemma" (He's definitely home).
- Pay attention to how certain the speaker sounds!
